Who can take Accommotrac Vision Training?

Anyone who has been tested and shown to have a problem with the focusing or ciliary muscle of the eye is a candidate for the Accommotrac Vision Trainer. In addition to focusing problems, the instrument has proven effective in treating eye movement problems such as nystagmus, eye turns (cross eyes or wall eyes) and amblyopia or lazy eye. The instrument has also been shown to be helpful in increasing peripheral awareness - a necessity for high level athletic performance. Successful results have been obtained in patients ranging from 6 to 55 years of age.

What are the problems associated with the focusing muscle?

Most people who are either nearsighted (myopic) or farsighted (hyperopic) have a focusing problem. Nearsighted people tend to over focus when they look at distant objects (causing blurry distance and clear near vision). Either problem can be corrected by learning how to appropriately control the focusing muscle.

Where is the focusing (Ciliary) muscle?

The focusing muscle is located behind the iris, the colored part of the eye, and like the iris it is a ring type muscle - it contracts and dilates. When the focusing muscle contracts, it causes the lens of the eye to change shape and focus on near objects. When the focusing muscle dilates, it causes the lens of the eye to change shape and focus on far objects.

How does the Accommotrac Vision Trainer Work?

The Accommotrac Vision Trainer is a high technology, electronic instrument which is used by a doctor to teach the patient, by sight and sound, how to voluntarily control the focusing muscle. The patient looks into the instrument and hears a sound which lets him or her know when the muscle is focusing properly. The process is called biofeedback.

What is Biofeedback?

Biofeedback is a natural process whereby a patient learns to control a bodily process or function which he or she is not normally aware of. For example, blood pressure, heart rate, and body temperature are all functions which patients can learn to voluntarily control. The same is true of the focusing muscle of the eye.

How is Biofeedback used with the Accommotrac Vision Trainer?

In using the Accommotrac Vision Trainer the patient looks into the instrument in a darkened room to eliminate visual distractions. A headset is worn and the patient selects which sound or tone he or she would like to use in response to changes in focus. As the patient looks into the instrument, harmless infra-red light is directed into the eye and the focusing status of the eye is measured 40 times per second. As the eye changes focus, the measurements are converted to sound signals. The signals occur instantaneously after each focusing measurement. Thus, the patient learns, by biofeedback, to voluntarily control the focusing muscle. In other words, it is a retraining program for learning to see clearly without the use of lenses.

How was the Accommotrac Vision Trainer developed?

The Accommotrac Vision Trainer was invented and patented by Joseph N. Trachtman, O.D., Ph.D., and Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, as part of a doctoral dissertation. After that, Dr. Trachtman worked for seven years in testing and developing this high technology, low risk, and highly successful vision trainer. Research has shown in excess of a 90% success rate in correcting , improving, or stopping focusing problems.

Do eyes naturally deteriorate with age?

The usual response by a patient to loss of clear vision is to go to the eye doctor for glasses or lenses. Corrective lenses do make things clear. However, as the eyes seem to become more and more dependent upon the lenses for clear vision, use of the focusing muscle lessens. The lenses inhibit the focusing muscle's activity and control of the muscle is weakened. This cycle can be broken, however, with vision training to teach the muscle proper activity. The purpose of the Accommotrac Vision Trainer is to teach the patient quickly and effectively how to properly use the ciliary muscle.

Does improvement from the Accommotrac Vision Trainer last?

Yes, The training includes a series of exercises which the patient must follow on his or her own. These exercises also use biofeedback and reinforce the vision training done in the doctor's office. Because the patient is using the focusing muscle properly and not allowing it to get lazy through continued reliance on lenses, improvement or correction achieved by the conclusion of the treatment program is enhanced. Although it is infrequent, a refresher session after 6 months to 2 years may be needed.

How many sessions are needed?

The number of sessions depends on two factors - the degree of the focusing problem and the motivation of the patient. The larger the focusing problem, the greater the number of training sessions that are required. Sessions usually last one hour and are conducted in the doctor's office. For example, extreme nearsightedness (20/400 or seeing only the big E on the eye chart) may require 25 sessions or more.
